Grab the glizzies
In January 1973 the island of Heimaey experienced first hand the unpredictability of an country made from fire. From nothing, a fissure opened and the earth began to empty into the town. Immediately the town responded and was able to evacuate everyone, resulting in 0 casualties. (except for a guy trying to steal drugs from an unoccupied pharmacy)
Then it became a battle of attrition. Firefighters, emergency workers, and volunteers fought the liquid rock with seawater to prevent the harbor from being destroyed. For five months the earth spilled outwards and against the efforts of the town. The endurance of man withheld and the eruption ended. The harbor remained in tact and the island gained 20% more land.
Now a 600 foot volcanic cone, Eldfell, sits at the perimeter of the town. Offering an overlook of the people who stepped toe-to-toe with a Titan, and prevailed.
The journey begins with a ferry ride.
